An excellent story about one family, the WIngfields, who personified the "Old South. They owned several plantations on the outskirts of Richmond which were worked by scores of slaves. The WIngfields ware benevolent slave owners who jeopardized their own safety on a number of occasions to "do right" by their slaves. The young master, Vincent Wingfield, joined the Confederate Cavalry quickly after Virginia seceded from the Union. The WIngfields were one of the socially elite families in Richmond who had "connections" to all sorts of important people in the Confederate Capitol. Vincent wound up as a Cavalry Officer under Wade Hampton. After proving himself brave and honorable numerous times, Vincent came to the personal attention of Robert E. Lee. Vincent volunteered for a near suicide mission to go behind enemy lines to spy for Lee. His mission was so well done and so dangerous that upon the timely completion Vincent was recommended for promotion by Lee. When it became obvious the War was lost, the WIngfields devised a plan for freeing all their slaves and giving them land in return for which the slaves had to agree to work for the WIngfields at the prevailing wage for a specified number of days each week. Due to their foresight and the benevolent manner they treated their slaves before the War ended the WIngfields were rewarded at war's end with a much smoother transition to the "New Order."Product details

This is a classic book, but this particular edition looks like it was printed on-demand by someone who has no familiarity with the work and is just putting this out there to grab orders for a public domain book.
The type-setting is awful - like someone just clicked "print" on a pdf of the text. The cover art is of a Union Army!
From a book-lover's perspective, this printing is a mess. I'm throwing it in the trash and going somewhere to find a hardback edition.
It's a good book; well written, but it was written a while ago, so if you're looking for a recent book on the War Between the States, this may not be the one for you. Also, this particular copy doesn't have REAL chapters, so if you are trying to go to the table of contents on a kindle or something, you can't. Otherwise, it's a pretty good copy if you're like me reading it for school, and you just want to get the book cheap.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It tells the story of the Civil War through the eyes of a young southern man living on a plantation. Unlike many books, it tells the story of the war from a southern standpoint, but not so much of a southern standpoint to be a turnoff to anyone at all. It's a tale that you will want to read over and over.
I have read many G.A. Henty books and enjoyed them. This story was no exception. However, it was painful to read the account published by Timeless Classic Books. This 2010 edition was apparently not proofread and had over 100 spelling errors. I have never read a book that was so poorly edited. Anyone with a spell checker could have done better. I have tried to contact the publisher, but their website is down.
I'd recommend the book, but please purchase from a different publisher.
I admit, I skimmed through some of this book. While I loved how Henty presented the argument for the South, this book was not as good as some of his others at having the characters be part of great events. Vincent spends most of his time not fighting, but in prison or wandering around after escaping.
Good, but not my favorite.
Henry always holds my interest by cast historical facts into terms of interesting characters who are convincingly real. From Ancient Rome to the America West he has the magic to introduce you into that period of history with the same comfort and ease.
Henty does a great job with the historic perspective of the American Civil War in this book.
The story shows how one can take a stand against insurmountable odds and do so while maintaining moral integrity.
The author in his gifted writing style maintains one's interest.
I found this book very well written and one that holds your interest.
Having read other books of Civil War era this is one of the ones I enjoyed the most. This is a book which carries a story line throughout as well as shows the historical background of several major battles that were fought.
Genre of this work is historical fiction and it is a worthwhile read whether one's ancestors were from the North or South. Though written from a Southern perspective and myself coming from ancestors who fought for the North I was pulling for the Southern hero of the story all the way through.
