Very interesting book. However, I only gave it 3 stars due to the many, many, many typos. The errors were not with the submitted text from the women, but actual typos in the Kindle version of the book. Most of the typos could have been easily recognized and fixed had someone actually proofed the book. I wouldn't be surprised if there were hundreds of typos. It was atrocious! Rarely did a "screen" go by that there was not an error. Again, not in the submitted texts from the women.Product details

This book contains first hand accounts of what wealthy southern women experienced during the Civil War. According to the accounts, Confederate women suffered greatly but heroically rose to all occasions to retain their dignity and spirit. Much of each account is taken up with stories of raids by invading Union soldiers who did not hesitate to steal the wealth of plantations overflowing with riches. Although the women writers expressed great horror and terror at such raids, there is no indication that any physical harm came to them or to their children, although they were left with what the women themselves considered little or nothing in the way of sustenance and faced what they thought of as starvation. Although the behavior of the Union soldiers was reprehenible in their depredations, their is almost a poetic justice in what these formerly pampered women endured, for the slaves whose forced labor made the extravagant life of plantation ease possible suffered far worse than any of these women as an everyday condition of their lives. Hardships that these delicate women would not have survived were daily endured by their female slaves. This reality makes these women's protestations of sacrifice and noble conduct in the face of difficulties brought on by their races' stubborn refusal to give up trafficking of human beings who suffered far worse than any of these southern plantation holders could have imagined, as they evidently considered their slaves incapable of humanity, seems ludicrous. Confederates, men and women alike, were blind to the common humanity shared by themselves and their slaves. As some of the slaves noted in their own memoirs, the farm animals were often treated better than they were. This wanton cruelty to fellow human beings was the real tragedy of the Civil War.
i choose this rating because it reflected the way Southern women lived and how they dealt with the difficulties inflicted on them by the so-called noble soldiers of the North who for the most part were nothing more than the dregs of the Union Army. There were decent Northern Soldiers and officers but they were few and far between. I ordered Book 2 after finishing book 1 because I had enjoyed Book 1.

Good primary source,but not a very interesting read.
The content of the book was interesting and sometimes sad, being made up of a lot of different women's stories from the Civil War era. Unfortunately the editing of the book consisted of short definitions for some of the old fashioned words and terms of the 19th century.
Had the editor actually read the book he or she would have been able to correct the numerous typos, random numbers, periods in the middle of sentences, and incorrect words. This really made the book difficult to read without having to stop and try to figure out what the real word was supposed to be. Throughout the book the spacing went back and forth between single and double space, often in the middle of the page!
It would have been a nice little book that I wouldn't have minded paying a couple of bucks for, had it been properly edited. As it is, it did nothing but annoy me every few pages when I encountered a typo and had to stop reading and try to figure out what the real word was supposed to be.
I generously gave this book 3 stars because of the work the writers, not the editors did. My advice is to skip it and save your money.
The content of this book was very interesting. The reason I only gave it 2 stars is because apparently no one edited it prior to making it into a book. I understand that these were memoirs of the women who lived through the war and their wording was maintained. There are over 300+ typographical errors. It really took away from the flow of the book. I detest misspelling. But the majority of the errors could have been avoided if only SOMEONE would have proof read this prior to releasing it. I sincerely doubt that the Weekly News Courier Charleston printed these stories with so many grammatical errors and typos. It takes away from the enjoyment of reading this book. I suggest someone read through it and edit it.
Back when our schools used to teach true American history, this would have been a useful book. Sad but true read.
